The masterplan brings together a new Coptic Orthodox church, multipurpose hall, youth and education facilities, classrooms, a commercial bakery, outdoor amphitheatre, play spaces and landscaped gathering areas. Together, these elements form a connected campus that supports the spiritual, cultural, educational and social life of the congregation, while creating new opportunities for engagement with the wider Dural community.
Responding carefully to the site’s natural topography, the design establishes a sequence of indoor and outdoor spaces for worship, gathering, reflection, learning and play. Terraces, pathways and landscaped recreation areas extend community life beyond the buildings, creating a precinct that feels open, welcoming and deeply connected to its natural setting.
At the heart of the precinct is the new church. Drawing on traditional Coptic ecclesiastical forms, the architecture reinterprets arched openings, stained glass and symbolic references through a contemporary lens. The result is a place of worship that balances continuity and renewal, reflecting the enduring identity of the Coptic Orthodox faith in Australia.
The multipurpose hall complements the church as a flexible civic and social space. Designed to support educational programs, youth activities, performances, celebrations and community gatherings, the hall includes a large flexible event space, commercial kitchen, library, classrooms, youth spaces, meeting areas and a stage. Its generous program reinforces the precinct as more than a place of worship, creating a broader destination for learning, culture and shared experience.
Across the site, the relationship between architecture and landscape remains central. Large glazed openings frame views to the surrounding bushland and draw natural light into the interior spaces, enriching the experience of both worship and community activity.
Together, the church, community facilities and landscape create a new destination for Dural, one that supports faith, culture and connection for generations to come.
