Marking a significant milestone in the evolution of this iconic national institution, the design will deepen visitor engagement and enhance accessibility. Officially unveiled in a moving ceremony, the Prime Minister reflected on the importance of this transformation:
“This is a great national capital. This Australian War Memorial is the most important building in our nation — not just because of its beauty, and I congratulate all of the remarkable architects, planners, and construction workers who built this magnificent extension, but because of what it represents. What this new entrance does is open... the Memorial’s heart even wider to all Australia. It is my great and indeed humble privilege to declare it open today.”
The Director of the Memorial, Matt Anderson, said: “This new Main Entrance is a key stage in enabling the Memorial to be more accessible to more visitors in the decades ahead. At the centre of the Main Entrance is the striking glass and steel Oculus, which floods the space with daylight, and through which visitors can glimpse the copper dome above the Hall of Memory. A mathematical inversion of the Memorial’s dome, the Oculus – which is Latin for “eye” – complements the heritage values of the original building."
Studio.SC is honoured to have contributed to this significant and enduring addition to one of Australia's most important national landmarks.
