Since opening in May 2016, Bennelong Bridge has helped reshape everyday movement between Wentworth Point and Rhodes.

Spanning 330 metres across Homebush Bay, the bridge reduced an 8km journey to less than 500m, creating a direct connection for pedestrians, cyclists, buses and future public transport. More than a crossing, it was imagined as a social connector: a piece of city-shaping infrastructure designed to support a healthier, more walkable and better-connected pattern of urban life.

Studio.SC, then Scott Carver, played a key role in the urban design thinking behind the bridge and broader Wentworth Point masterplan. Working with Billbergia and the Wentworth Point landowners, our team helped shape the case for a new kind of connection across Homebush Bay, one that could link a growing community to public transport, services, jobs and everyday amenity.

It was a bold client vision. Billbergia, led by John Kinsella, understood early that Wentworth Point needed more than density. It needed access, amenity and a stronger relationship with the wider city. Through a privately funded model and complex Voluntary Planning Agreement process, Bennelong Bridge showed what can happen when public benefit, development vision and urban design ambition align.

Former Scott Carver Director Bob Perry was central to the thinking around the bridge as a catalyst for community life. His view was that the project was not simply about movement, but about belonging; allowing people, services and everyday activity to flow between two previously separated peninsulas.

“As Bennelong Bridge shows, well-considered infrastructure can do more than solve a route. It can shape behaviour, unlock precincts and help communities feel connected from day one.”
Doug Southwell, Co-Managing Director, Studio.SC

More than 10 years on, Bennelong Bridge continues to stand as a powerful example of infrastructure shaped by social purpose, urban design ambition and long-term public benefit.
