The concept reimagines the building’s arrival experience through a series of targeted lobby and façade upgrades, creating a stronger street presence and a more distinctive sense of address for tenants and visitors. The key move, however, was the vertical replanning of the main lobby unlocking a vast volume of underutilised space and delivering approximately 1,200 sqm of additional NLA within the existing building envelope.
Leveraging the building’s location and connectivity to the emerging Cockle Bay Wharf precinct, a series of interventions at the ground plane transform the existing rear laneway into a vibrant building “third space", a place designed to capture tenants, passers-by and the wider public moving between Darling Harbour and Town Hall.
Through the combination of new commercial floor space, upgraded amenities, activated public spaces and a new eat-street offering, 1 Market is reimagined as a destination in its own right, and a renewed gateway at the nexus of Sydney’s commercial and entertainment precincts.
