The WEEC refurbishment seeks to improve the amenity, therefore comfort, dignity and wellbeing of their clients, to increase rehabilitation. There is an opportunity here to create a unique and inspirational home for those most in need, that reintegrates WEEC into its vibrant Bourke St context.
The building opens up the ground plane to welcome the general public of Surry Hills, allowing them to appreciate the heritage listed façade and chapel interior, assisting in the rehabilitation and reintegration of people experiencing homelessness.
From the renewal of the heritage Chapel with new café, landscaped portico and support services, to the reconfigured guest rooms and amenities, staff facilities, garden terrace and screening, the design celebrates the historic built character of Surry Hills, reinforcing the Neoclassical Greek Revival Chapel and Brutalist extension fabric.
