The DA-approved renewal retains the significant Edwardian fabric and distinctive Eliza Street façade, with a new two-storey addition positioned behind the original building. Finished in charcoal-toned metal cladding, the addition is deliberately restrained, creating a clear distinction between old and new without overpowering the heritage structure.
The renewed venue will include a black box theatre, upgraded ballroom, arts café, restaurant, artist studios and supporting backstage facilities. A new accessible entry and lift will connect all levels, while improved lighting and activation along the adjoining right of ways will strengthen the venue’s relationship with its neighbourhood.
Together, the project positions Newtown School of Arts for its next creative era.
