Restoring Victoria Theatre to Take Centre Stage Again
The revisitation of the Victoria Theatre in Newcastle will bring back to life, NSW’s oldest remaining theatre, dating back to 1891. The ‘Mighty Vic’ as it is known will provide Newcastle a live performance venue that celebrates its’ history whilst supporting an inclusive and adaptable venue, supporting the cultural and civic growth of Newcastle as a city.

Theatres bring enormous economic benefits to surrounding businesses, and the Victoria Theatre will bring people back to the city centre and boosting the Hunter’s collective live performance and tourism infrastructure.

As a state listed heritage theatre, the Might Vic has a rich history of silent pictures, vaudeville and live performance.  Whilst having not operated as a theatre since 1965, Studio.SC worked with our client Century Group to both celebrate the existing heritage fabric, layered with over 130 years of use, with new insertions to enable a contemporary functional theatre.  This includes a revitalised lobby, new eating and dress circle structure, new public and performer amenities, back of house facilities, and importantly a new presentation to the street through reinstatement of a veranda structure, enabling the life of the theatre to connect out to the street.
